I’m planning to hatch some baby brine shrimp in the 24-36h. Is that too early to start feeding them BBS?

Congratulations! It's never too early to start them on bbs although I usually wait until day 3!!

Im with Brian, congrats Mike! I like to let them feed on the slime coat a few days first because I think it helps stimulate slime production and good parenting. I want the fry tight to the parent feeding..not swimming all over the tank .

Thanks guys- I’m going to feed BBS tomorrow if they hatch! I bought some decapsulated eggs to feed them as well.

Day 5 and they are scarfing down BBS. I put in way too much initially. They are still feeding off the parents slime coats. The only way I know they are eating the BBS is bc I see some orange in their bellies. Even now I’m seeing different size fry. Really fascinating.
Tom- I have 20 gal and another 40 gal breeder- both currently in use though

Mike glad they are doing well. Fry grow fast .. before you know it they will be needing a tank of their own. Whats your long term grow out plan for these. Often hobbyists new to discus breeding under estimate how much space they really need.

Hey guys- right now they are in a 40 breeder with parents, it’s interesting to see the parents swim by each other as if “you take them now”. I hate to anthropomorphize- but I can relate. The male is kind of hanging with out the fry. The male has some white marks on his body- he may brushed against a sponge, or it could be slime or hopefully not bite marks. I think they are still too young to do damage. The female looks fine.

I had my 7 yo start a BBS culture today so hopefully tomorrow or Mon we will have more to feed. Al- once the fry are no longer parasitizing their parents or if the parents become aggressive towards them, the plan is to move them to a 20 gal. As they grow I will put them in a 40 gal breeder. I do want to give the parents a break- first time parents with a successful hatch. It sure if I just remove the breading cone and hopefully they will chill.

I appreciate the advice. I have 2 in QT that laid eggs and I have others in the display laying. I guess it’s a good problem to have.

Lastly- I’ve read that gill flukes tend to kill fry and young discus. Do people treat prophylatically? If so, when?

Mike the best time to treat gill flukes is before the pair spawns. Fry are pretty fragile and really don't do well with medications.
