My pleasure Al once the rules are finalized I am pretty sure Harry and I will need to select the eight actual contest fish.
Quick update everyone,
Pat put together the rules list and I have sent them out to several members that had offered help in the contest or that I though could give some good feedback. Got some replies back, and waiting on a few others....but os far things are looking good and we should have this finalized shortly.
Thanks Pat for the help here!!

I have a question about the contest and I cant seem to post new threads here or in the discus university for some reason. Anyway, many of us grow out our fry as a small business or at least supplementary income. Im trying to decide which batch of fry to track and to enter into the contest as I truly wish to participate, but if the requirement will be to grow out the whole batch this poses a financial burden of sorts. I know that may seem insignificant but at the point Im at in breeding every penny counts, I dont have endless amounts of fry but enough to keep my hobby afloat haha. So my question is, will it be required to grow out the whole group? Or will it be acceptable to sell off some at various stages of development? Regardless I WILL participate but I just would like to know. Thank you all for making this a reality, truly a fantastic idea and Im excited to see everyone's success!!

Do what u want with other culls..
Do as many spawns as u want.

Drew,
I sent you a pm, but to answer the contest related question.. we'll be posting the final rules shortly, they won't change much from whats here posted so far, so my first suggestion is to go back thru the pages of this thread for general info. You will not be required to grow out the whole batch of fry, you must however pick X number (to be finalized- but most likely 8) to grow to adult. It will be a commitment of a year for those fry to adult.. you can do what ever you want with the the ones you don't select for the contest. HTH.al
ps.university can only have threads started by members for fish critique by qualified university staff...comments are not allowed there by general members as it would take away from the fish being judged along Discus show lines.
Pss..Threads cannot be started in the Hobbyists Challenger section except by the participants...or admins. General questions about the contest may be asked in this thread.

Al, quick question on culling the current spawn and starting over. Seems only fair to send the required documentation with the new spawn and once approved do we continue in the existing thread or a new one?
Pat

Pat,
If you cull the spawn that you have started with, provide the reasons why in the thread and close the thread if you want no more discussion on that particular group of fry (your choice) but do not delete the thread( Challengers are Moderators of their forum board and can do this). Then start a new thread in your Challenger Forum with background and photo documents etc as you did in the first set of fish.
Contestants have until the end of the open enrollment period (August) to settle in on a spawn that they want to use...I think this is reasonable since anyone thats breeding Discus will run into situations where a spawn doesn't work out and they have to cull them and start over with another batch of spawn....its part of being a breeder, IMO.

Al & Pat I have a quick question too.
I think it was decided that August 15 was the deadline? do our Fry need to be dime size by August 15th in order to enter?
~ Pete
any advice I give is just that, advice. I say it because it's what works for me.
Ohhh crap i better crank up the fishy porn, I thought we had until the end of august and I was really hoping to get my WB successfully spawning by the enrollment end date. I guess I hopefully still have two more spawns theoretically but its getting close!!

Thanks Pat.I'll go by that unless I hear otherwise
Mine seem to have went on a egg laying vacation, makes me nervous it takes a long time for them to come out of that.

Thats fine Pete....and that date may actually get bumped out a few weeks if we need to.I really want as many participants as possible.....so far its looking great... 6 contestants enrolled and 3 more on the way.
Put the word out everyone, we need as many Hobbysists in this as we can get and from around the world if we can! The glove is down, the hobbyists are entering the arena...Who will take home the coveted honor of winning this years competition? This is truly the "Discus" olympics
